The Nemesis Asteroid Incident began as a simple scientific curiosity. A previously unrecorded asteroid emerged from the fringes of the solar system and began a plunge towards the earth. Scientists immediately started work on plotting the trajectory of the large object and when early calculations were announced which showed a likely collision with the Earth, a global panic began. Media immediately began to field the growing frenzy, offering countless doomsday scenarios and providing sometimes unwitting scientific ‘corroboration’ for their theories.
While professional astronomers continued to track and report ongoing disruptions of the asteroids path (the gas giants performing wonderfully as blockers) the world fell into a series of catastrophes. Religious fanatics of all stripes began to whip the general public into terrified mobs, and even with concerted effort governments began to lose control. For a short time global chaos reigned. Into this chaos, the first super-powered individuals emerged. Some preyed on their fellows, stirring the disorder to provide themselves with greater immunity from the remnants of law and order. Others worked in the opposite direction, bringing rogues to heel and establishing stable points of order.
As the time of the originally predicted collision approached, billions of eyes turned to the sky. No fireball greeted them. Life was not extinguished. As the astronomers had been desperately trying to convey (to public disbelief) the asteroids track had been altered sufficiently by its passage through the solar system that instead of crashing down on the earths surface, it span into orbit instead. The tidal disruptions which followed were damaging, but paled in comparison to the carnage committed by mankind against itself.
